How to Put on a Dog Harness Correctly (Step-by-Step)
A well-fitting dog harness is a comfortable and secure way to walk your furry friend. Unlike collars, harnesses distribute pressure evenly across your dog’s chest and back, reducing the risk of neck injuries and making walks more enjoyable for both of you. But putting on a harness can sometimes be tricky, especially if your dog is wiggly or new to the experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a proper and positive harnessing experience.
Step 1: Choose the Right Harness
Before you start, make sure you have a harness that fits your dog correctly. Measure your dog’s girth (the circumference of their chest behind their front legs) and neck. Consult the harness manufacturer’s sizing chart to select the appropriate size. Consider the type of harness that suits your dog’s needs and activity level. Front-clip harnesses can help with pulling, while back-clip harnesses are generally easier to put on and are suitable for dogs that walk well on a leash. Once you find the right type and size, prepare to put the harness on your pet.
Step 2: Prepare a Positive Environment
Create a positive association with the harness. Have treats or a favorite toy ready. Let your dog sniff and explore the harness before you attempt to put it on. Speak in a calm and reassuring voice. If your dog seems anxious, take a break and try again later. The goal is to make the harnessing process a positive experience.
Step 3: Loosen the Straps
Before putting the harness on, loosen all the straps to their maximum extent. This will make it easier to slip the harness over your dog’s head and legs without causing discomfort. Refer to your harness’ instructions, as different designs might have different adjustment points.
Step 4: Put the Harness Over the Head (If Applicable)
Some harnesses require you to slip them over your dog’s head. If this is the case, gently guide the harness over your dog’s head, ensuring that the chest piece is positioned correctly. Use treats and praise to reward your dog for cooperating. For dogs that are hesitant, you might consider placing the harness on the ground and luring them to put their head through the opening, rewarding them as they do so.
Step 5: Secure the Chest Strap
Once the harness is over the head (or directly positioned for step-in harnesses), carefully lift one front leg and guide it through the appropriate opening. Secure the chest strap(s) around your dog’s body, ensuring that they are snug but not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the strap and your dog’s body. With step-in harnesses, your dog will step into the harness, and you simply lift the harness and clasp it over their back.
Step 6: Adjust the Fit
After securing all the straps, double-check the fit. Make sure the harness is not too loose, which could allow your dog to escape, or too tight, which could cause discomfort. Adjust the straps as needed to achieve a snug but comfortable fit. Pay attention to the placement of the harness; it should sit comfortably on your dog’s chest and back without rubbing or chafing.
Step 7: Attach the Leash
Now that the harness is properly fitted, attach the leash to the designated ring or clip on the harness. Take your dog for a short walk to ensure the harness is comfortable and secure. Observe your dog’s behavior for any signs of discomfort or irritation. Make any necessary adjustments before embarking on a longer walk.
By following these steps and maintaining a patient and positive approach, you can successfully put on a dog harness correctly and enjoy safe and comfortable walks with your canine companion.
