Great Danes were originally bred for hunting large game, such as boars, which required significant strength and power. Their broader chests and denser bone structure contributed to this. Irish Wolfhounds, as their name suggests, were bred to hunt wolves. Their height, speed, and agility were more important than brute strength, allowing them to track and take down their quarry across long distances. This resulted in a more streamlined and less bulky physique.
Ultimately, both breeds are incredibly large, and individual dogs within each breed can vary significantly. A particularly large Great Dane could be taller and heavier than a smaller Irish Wolfhound, and vice versa. But as a general rule, the Irish Wolfhound is typically taller, while the Great Dane is typically heavier and more muscular.
Therefore, instead of declaring one “bigger” than the other, it’s more accurate to appreciate their unique qualities. The Irish Wolfhound excels in height and lean athleticism, while the Great Dane possesses greater weight and muscular build. Both breeds stand as impressive examples of canine grandeur, each with its own distinct appeal.
