What Two Dogs Make A Bull Terrier?

The Bull Terrier, with its distinctive egg-shaped head and muscular build, is a fascinating breed. Understanding its origins involves tracing its lineage back to two key dog breeds: the Bulldog and the English White Terrier (now extinct). The story of the Bull Terrier is one of calculated breeding aimed at creating a versatile and courageous fighting dog.

The Bulldog played a crucial role in the Bull Terrier’s foundation. Bulldogs of the 18th and early 19th centuries were quite different from the modern breed. They were lighter, more agile, and possessed immense courage and tenacity. These Bulldogs were primarily used in bull-baiting, a cruel blood sport where dogs were pitted against bulls. Their short, powerful jaws and unwavering determination allowed them to latch onto the bull’s nose and hold on, providing entertainment (and unfortunately, financial gain) to spectators. The Bulldog’s courage, strength, and determination were highly valued traits that breeders sought to preserve and refine.

The English White Terrier (also known as the White English Terrier or Old English Terrier) was the other essential ingredient in the Bull Terrier mix. This breed, now extinct, was a sleek and agile terrier known for its white coat, keen senses, and ratting abilities. They were faster and more nimble than the Bulldog, adding speed, agility, and a more refined appearance to the emerging Bull Terrier. The English White Terrier also contributed to the Bull Terrier’s characteristic white coat, which was initially considered desirable. While the English White Terrier excelled at vermin control, it also possessed a fiery temperament and was sometimes used in dogfighting.

The crossbreeding of these two breeds began in the early to mid-19th century, primarily by James Hinks of Birmingham, England. Hinks’ goal was to create a “gentleman’s companion” and a skilled fighting dog. He aimed to combine the Bulldog’s strength and courage with the English White Terrier’s agility and refinement. He selectively bred for specific traits, resulting in a dog that was more athletic and less prone to the health problems that plagued some Bulldogs. Hinks also focused on producing a dog with a clean, white coat, which was considered fashionable at the time.

It’s important to note that while the Bulldog and English White Terrier are the primary contributors to the Bull Terrier’s genetic makeup, there is some speculation that other breeds may have been introduced to further refine the breed’s characteristics. Some believe that the Dalmatian, Fox Terrier, or even Greyhound may have played a minor role, contributing to the Bull Terrier’s elegance and athleticism. However, the Bulldog and English White Terrier remain the undisputed foundation of the breed.

Over time, breeders moved away from using Bull Terriers solely for fighting and focused on developing them as companion animals and show dogs. The modern Bull Terrier retains the courage and determination of its ancestors but is also known for its playful and affectionate nature. While the breed’s origins are rooted in blood sports, responsible breeding practices have helped to create a more well-rounded and amiable companion animal.
