The initial idea was to paint the bullseye directly onto a dog. While seemingly simple, finding the right dog breed was crucial. After careful consideration, the Bull Terrier, known for its distinctive egg-shaped head and amiable personality, was chosen. The next challenge was finding a Bull Terrier with the right temperament and appearance. After an extensive search, a dog named Kingsmere Moondoggie, affectionately called “Smudgie,” was selected as the first Bullseye.
The application of the iconic bullseye is remarkably simple and humane. The red ring around the dog’s left eye isn’t permanent dye; it’s a non-toxic, vegetable-based paint applied by professional makeup artists. This ensures the dog’s comfort and safety are paramount.
Bullseye’s debut was a resounding success. The dog instantly resonated with Target’s target audience, adding a touch of warmth and approachability to the brand. Bullseye quickly became a pop culture icon, appearing in Target commercials, print ads, and in-store promotions.
