Want to spoil your furry friend with a special treat? A homemade dog cake is the perfect way to celebrate birthdays, gotcha days, or just because! This recipe is designed to be safe and delicious for dogs, using ingredients they can enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour for sensitive dogs)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup plain, unsweetened yogurt (Greek yogurt is fine)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter (ensure it’s xylitol-free!)
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrots

Frosting (optional)

  • 1/2 cup plain, unsweetened yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter (xylitol-free)
  • Optional: Dog-friendly treats for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a small cake pan or muffin tin.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix together the applesauce, yogurt, egg, and peanut butter.
  4. Combine Wet & Dry: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Add Carrots: Fold in the shredded carrots.
  6. Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan or muffin tin. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool: Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Frost (optional): While the cake is cooling, prepare the frosting. Mix together the yogurt and peanut butter until smooth. Once the cake is completely cool, frost it and decorate with dog-friendly treats.

Important Notes

  • Xylitol Warning: Always, always, always make sure that the peanut butter you use does NOT contain xylitol. Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. Read the label carefully!
  • Allergies: Be aware of any allergies your dog may have and adjust the ingredients accordingly. If your dog is sensitive to wheat, use oat flour or another alternative.
  • Portion Control: While this cake is made with dog-friendly ingredients, it’s still a treat and should be given in moderation. Adjust the serving size based on your dog’s size and weight.
  • Storage: Store the cake in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

This dog cake recipe is a fun and easy way to show your furry friend some love. Enjoy baking and watching your dog enjoy their special treat! Remember to always supervise your dog while they are eating and to consult with your veterinarian if you have any concerns about their diet.
