While not a separate breed themselves, their unique coloration stems from specific genetic factors within the existing Labrador gene pool. A History Rooted in Labrador Tradition
The Fox Red shade isn’t a recent development. It’s a historically recognized shade within the Labrador breed. Early Labradors exhibited a wider range of colors than the standard black, yellow, and chocolate we see predominantly today. What we now call Fox Red was often referred to as ‘dark yellow’ or ‘shade of liver’ in the early 20th century. The lineage can be traced back to some of the foundational Labrador kennels. These darker yellow shades, while always present, became less common as breeders focused on achieving consistent “standard” yellow shades.
Genetics: The Secret to the Red Coat
The color genetics of Labradors are relatively straightforward. The primary gene responsible for coat color is the B (black) locus. This gene has two alleles: B (black) and b (chocolate). The E (extension) locus determines whether the pigment produced by the B locus is expressed. The E locus also has two alleles: E (allows black or chocolate expression) and e (produces yellow). A dog with ee at the E locus will be yellow, regardless of its B locus genes.
Fox Red coloration specifically arises in yellow labs (ee) with a combination of polygenes, often referred to as “rufus” genes, that intensify the yellow pigment to a deep reddish hue. These modifier genes are not fully understood but influence the amount and type of pigment produced, leading to the rich, red color. Breeders often select for these modifier genes to produce litters with the desired Fox Red shade. In essence, a Fox Red Lab is a yellow Lab with genetic factors pushing the yellow pigment towards red.
Temperament: The Classic Labrador Traits
Fox Red Labs, like all Labradors, are generally known for their friendly, outgoing, and intelligent nature. Their temperament is not solely determined by their color. Responsible breeding plays a significant role in shaping their personality. A well-bred Fox Red Lab should exhibit the typical Labrador traits: a strong desire to please, high trainability, boundless energy, and a gentle demeanor, especially with children. They are eager to retrieve, enjoy swimming, and thrive on human interaction. Early socialization and consistent training are crucial to ensure they develop into well-adjusted companions.
While the genetic predisposition for the typical Labrador temperament should be present, individual personalities will still vary. Some may be more energetic than others, and some may be more laid-back. However, a reputable breeder who prioritizes temperament alongside color will significantly increase the chances of obtaining a well-adjusted and loving Fox Red Labrador.
