Dog Park: A How-To Guide
Dog Park is a strategic board game where you collect dogs, manage resources, and compete to become the most reputable dog owner. Here’s a breakdown of how to play:
Objective
The goal is to earn the most reputation points by the end of the game. Reputation points are primarily gained by collecting dogs, fulfilling dog cards, and earning bonus reputation during final scoring.
Game Setup
1. **Board:** Place the game board in the center of the play area. 2. **Resource Cubes:** Place all resource cubes (treats, tennis balls, leashes, and bones) in a supply near the board. 3. **Dog Cards:** Shuffle the dog cards and deal four to each player. This is your starting hand. 4. **Dog Park Cards:** Shuffle the dog park cards and place them face down on the designated space on the board. Reveal the top three. These represent the dogs currently available for adoption. 5. **Walker Tokens:** Each player chooses a color and takes their matching walker token. Place the walker tokens on the starting space of the game board. 6. **Reputation Marker:** Each player takes a reputation marker of their chosen color and places it on the “0” space of the reputation track. 7. **Starting Resources:** Each player receives a starting set of resources (typically 2 treats and 1 tennis ball – consult the rulebook for exact amounts).
Gameplay
The game is played over four rounds, each representing a season. Each round consists of a number of phases: 1. **Planning Phase:** Players simultaneously and secretly choose one of their dog cards to play. This card indicates the actions they will take during the Action Phase. These dog cards are the core of your strategy, providing access to resources and allowing you to collect dogs. 2. **Action Phase:** Players reveal their chosen dog cards simultaneously. Actions are resolved in ascending order of the dog card’s number (1-4). Each dog card allows you to take several actions, such as: * **Gathering Resources:** Collect resources from the supply based on the dog card’s instructions. * **Moving:** Move your walker token around the board. Certain spaces provide bonuses or require specific resources. * **Adopting Dogs:** Pay the resource cost indicated on a dog park card to add that dog to your collection. This dog is removed from the board and added to your hand. * **Fulfilling Dog Cards:** Spend the required resources indicated on a dog card in your hand (other than the one you played this turn) to “walk” that dog and gain the reputation points listed on the card. Discard the fulfilled dog card. * **Purchasing Upgrades:** Some locations on the board allow you to purchase upgrades that provide permanent bonuses. 3. **Dog Park Refresh Phase:** After all players have completed their actions, discard any remaining dog park cards and replenish them with new cards from the deck. 4. **Cleanup Phase:** Players discard the dog card they played this round. You will then be able to draw a dog card at the end of the fourth round of the game to refresh your hand.
End of the Game
After four rounds, the game ends. Players tally their final reputation points: * **Dogs:** Reputation points from all dogs in your hand. * **Fulfilled Dog Cards:** Reputation points from all fulfilled dog cards. * **Bonus Reputation:** Some dog cards or upgrades may award bonus reputation points based on certain conditions. The player with the most reputation points wins the game and is crowned the most reputable dog owner!
Strategy Tips
* **Plan Ahead:** Think about the resources you need and the dogs you want to collect. * **Balance:** Strive for a balance between collecting resources and fulfilling dog cards. * **Adapt:** Be flexible and adapt your strategy based on the available dog park cards and your opponents’ actions. * **Upgrade Wisely:** Choose upgrades that complement your overall strategy. Good luck and have fun at the dog park!
